I don't believe that it's actually an increase. People with ADHD existed in the same proportions, just were masking or were the neighbourhood oddballs and so on. I think that as people moved around less in the past, communities had their 'characters' who were known to be different but mostly still accepted as people knew they had value & were harmless.
It has been asked, though, if there were something unknown in the environment such as Bisphenol A (now known of course) that has not received the attention of long exposure times to fully understand their neurological effects.
