A tip I came across somewhere: when you keep dumping your keys, phone, and items like that in a specific spot and you can't keep it cleared no matter what you try - you could place a tray or bowl there. It turns that spot into a home or intentional temporary holding space for keys and phone. I really like that idea. Turn a bug into a feature, work with what you've got - with the flow, not against.
