Oooh, it's getting noisier on here.
From where I am, it seems to be mostly parasocial - famous people's followers, and server admins' charges, yabbering at them 
Still seems to be very much a broadcast channel. Are people too tired or wary to post conversationally?
For many this is the Nth online platform they've joined, it gets tiring.
@EmmaDingle Interesting observation. I'd say people are just exhausted at this point. For example, I just went and wiped all my 
accounts and realised some of the older ones date back to 2008! If they've moved platforms or accounts and had to set up shop over and over I'd guess people are either anxious, jaded, or maybe a little of both.
@comfortwriter yup, there's a lot of sunk cost in previous platforms, and everyone seems to be in a "wait and see" holding pattern.
Back to 2008 is literally a gazillion internet years! 
Personally, I'm shattered. And if a nerd like me is exhausted, heavens help any non-nerds trying to suss out what's going on!
Professionally I owe it to those I work with to be able to give informed advice. So will keep prodding things and kicking the tyres.
