Prof. Catherine Flick

I'm making a scarecrow for our scarecrow festival and what I would really like to do is have a button that a passerby can press and then a song plays. So I'd need weatherproof speaker and remote/button/something, and something that would just play one song. Is there anything off the shelf that would do this? Looking at my peeps because this would probably be up their alley. (bonus points if I can attach fairy or disco lights to the button that come on too)

@leyrer @CatherineFlick

Ohai, nice to meet you.
Having something that plays a song when a button is pressed is super easy.
The simplest solution would be a board like this:

If you want to also light up something, maybe check out neopixel based products.
In this case i would use an esp32 or something similar with a little waveshield.

Have fun tinkering!

PS: join your local hackspace!

@overflo @leyrer sadly I don’t have the mental or actual time to join a hackspace, my making time is limited to the 2-3h between kid bed time and mine :) but thanks for the suggestions! Great ideas.

@nominally ooooooooooooh. I could definitely weatherproof one of those :O thanks for the idea!!

@nominally perfect, I got a bigger one off Amazon (boo, but hey) and it’s perfect. Thanks!!!

@CatherineFlick

A simple, but cheap option could be one of those recordable birthday cards.
Opening the card plays the recording, so maybe you could swap that for a latched switch somehow?

@thomas I looked at all of that and then the button press voice recorder soft toy speaker came in the post and it’s crappy but works!!

@CatherineFlick Wait, wait, back up. Scarecrow festival.

@d yes! My village does one most years. Houses make scarecrows, there’s a fete, a beer festival at the cricket ground, and the pubs do special events

Recordable doorbell? I'm sure I've seen such things. The bell push at least should already be weatherproofed, don't know about the playback unit though!
